Definition of Success

Today we’re going to talk about success - and how to get there, step by step.

But first, let’s talk a little background because it’s a process, success. Sadly, you can’t go from being a high school dropout to being a CEO in one year without faking documents and misleading a lot of people. But it is possible to go from nothing to something in a short time if you make a plan and stick to it strictly.

Indeed, you have to learn a little something almost constantly, you have to change your point of view - start seeing things as opportunities and openings and doorways to things you never saw before.

Most of all I think our desire is comfort and security, the kind of security that means there is no such thing as a financial emergency. We don’t want to be crippled by any unexpected expenses.

When something goes wrong, I’m immediately checking out my budget to see what I can move where to afford the cost of correcting a problem. Replacing two cars this year was a catastrophe on our budget. To be honest, we’re still recovering from the addition of a car payment that we didn’t have before, there’s a lot to be said about owning a car outright. A LOT! How I miss those days, lol.

My point is, we’re really not that different you and I, we have a lot of the same issues come up in our lives, problems, catastrophes, etc. It’s how we react to them that makes the difference in our future. I realize that I can’t take “it” with me when I go, but that doesn’t keep me from wanting “it”. IT being money.

There are tons of cliches about money and the never ending chase of masses of it…my favorite is, “You can’t take it with you when you go.” Even though you can’t take it with you, I’d like to leave something behind for my son, and any other child(ren) I may have in the future, and my husband if I go first. That’s hard to think about - that’s for another day.

We all want to be successful, how we define that success for ourselves is what makes us individuals, and as such, individuals with different goals. So how do you translate your definition of success into a working outline of goals and start working toward your personal definition of success? Check it out…

1. List your goals and objectives for yourself.
Be realistic about your abilities when you make goals. Don’t expect to have a doctorate in 4 years.

2. Separate your list into long term goals (5 or more years) and short term goals (0 - 5 years).
Separate them further if you like, but keep it simple so that you don’t give up on it.

3. Starting from the short term goals, research the steps it will take to get to the shortest term goal on your list.
By this time you can see where having an idea of what you like to do can be handy, the idea of a list of goals is to have a centralized accountability system. If you think about it, writing a list of goals, in short and long term allocations is accountability in black and white. Are you going to argue with your plan for success? If you put your list in a location that you see often, it will keep you on track and responsible to yourself for taking those steps outlined.

4. Start with your shortest term goal and work your way to the top.
Only you know the priorities in your life, don’t let anyone else dictate the path your life should take, your spouse is the only person that should have a significant effect on your future plans. Whatever those plans may be.

As much as I resent the idea of lists and accountability, I have to be accountable to myself for what I accomplish - or don’t accomplish in life. No one takes credit - or blame for how I turn out, that’s all on me. I want my family to be able to carry one without me without having to worry about finances.

Mind you this is only a guide or a starting point to how you can create some accountability for yourself, too often we let days, weeks and even years pass us by before we realize, or remember, that once we had goals and none of those have been accomplished. How sad to look back at life with regrets and should have done’s.

Success is relative term for happiness. If your idea of success is to not have to rely on the government for support and you’re doing that, congratulations. If your idea of success is to leave a legacy, you might have a lot of work to do, unless of course you’re already Bill Gates, or someone equally as famous.

Ultimately your success falls on your shoulders, so what are you going to do about it?

You Mean, I’m IT? 32 Success Tips.

Ever play tag when you were a kid? I sucked at that game. Seriously. I’ve never been able to run with any speed or efficiency, in fact, when I run it’s the kind of thing that is compared to a train wreck. Everyone watches with their hands over their eyes but some fingers moved so they don’t miss anything. I’m short which you would think would lend me speed…no such luck.

I’m terribly shy among people so anytime I played tag, I tried to be the fastest…oh how I tried…but I never succeeded, therefore I was always IT. Always. You would think the game wouldn’t be fun if you didn’t share responsibility of being it…but no, it was always me.

The years of people tagging people have begun again…in the blogosphere. I’ve been tagged by DCR. Because it’s him - the most creative blogger I’ve ever read, I’ll indulge…

The idea here is to mark your five favorite tips with an asterisk and then add one of your own.

1. Look, read, and learn.

2. Be, EXCELLENT to each other.

3. Don’t let money change ya!

4. Always reply to your comments.

5. Blog about what you know & love.

6. Don’t use filthy language-buy a dictionary.

7. Blog about something educational.

*8. Be yourself; others will follow.

9. Don’t have too many blogs that will become a chore to maintain.

10. Keep it simple, user-friendly, interesting and organized!

11. Keep the blog simple and sweet!!!

12. Share with others your thoughts and don’t be shy!

13. Never ask for link exchange. Blog hop to increase traffic.

14. Don’t clutter your blog with ads all over the place. IT’S IRRITATING.

*15. Don’t comment for the sake of commenting. Some looked too fake and its a big turn off!

16. Share something interesting and you will gain more readers.

17. Show that we care to all bloggers, treat each other as friends.

*18. Pictures say a million words. Keep them coming!

19. Blogging should be fun or you’ll get tired of it pretty soon.

20. Don’t think people will come to your blog if you’re not willing to pay a visit to them.

21. Everyone loves to read short posting and best, illustrated with a picture.

22. Try not to publish more than 5 posts in one blog a day. Even if it’s from feed reader, it’s quite hard to digest and catch up reading everything.

*23. Blog: the other window to peek into people’s life, minus the trouble. Keep a certain level of privacy to yourself.

24. Never tell your readers that you are going on vacation. That’s basically telling them to not visit your blog for a week. Instead, write several posts, and take advantage of the timestamp feature.

25. Try and write with people in mind that are “somewhat similar to you”. Allow your audience to identify with your blog and feel “at home”.

26. The key to a good article is a good introduction. A joke, a question or a picture does wonders.

27. If you are looking to earn an income blogging read StevePavlina.com and Problogger.net, you will be amazed at what you can learn.

28. Write for yourself first. Remember that it takes time, effort, patience…and above all, daring.

29. Use Google Alerts for immediate alerts of news and/or blog posts about topics you specify, clip those that interest you into Google Notebook (it also copies the URLS for reference).

*30. Be attentive to your blog, viewing it as a reader would; be adventurous and don’t be afraid to stray a little off-topic; finally, get your audience involved with your blog, so that it’s more than a one-way conversation.

31. Get your posts noticed by taking advantage of viral tags to link to specific posts rather than your blog in general.

32.Don’t be afraid to expose scammers you’d be saving other people time and money!

So who do I tag?

Let’s start with the always insightful Bloggrrl. She always writes great blogs that seem to concur with my thoughts…ironically. I like to think not many people think like I do…but glad that some do!

And I’d like also to tag PureBlogging, David always has great tips to share and often inspires me.

And finally, Derek Semmier from Dad Balance at EMomsAtHome.com, Derek always has great information to share about his family, how he manages and has even figured out how to network on the golf course!

I only linked to fellow bloggers that I actually read and respect their opinions, I look forward to their responses and to see which tips they like best. :)

How To: Find and View HUD Home Listings

Yesterday we talked about why this is the perfect time to seize a HUD opportunity, I have a few things to show you about the process, different screens within the website. This is all readily available and free on the internet, for every state in the US. For this article we’re only searching HUD home listings in Texas. Specifically, Tarrant County.

There are several different government organizations you can check out that have property for sale, but the majority of the other properties are seizures from business and miscellaneous organizations. Check out them out here. But for the purposes of this articles, we’re targeting foreclosures, so we’re just going to go for HUD. If you have the time and patience, another good thing to research for foreclosures would be banks for loans defaulted with them.

So here are a few pages you’ll see in the search. The first is a screen shot of the search parameters by county, the second of cities that have listings and the third is a screen shot of a few of the results after hitting the search button.
Selections by County on HUD Site Search Capabilities Results After Search

Now there are a few things I want to point out to you about the three listings I captured in this last shot.

The first one lists a damaged foundation in the comments, right away you have something to work with, but we all know you don’t want to deal with foundation problems. The second says the same, so we move on. The third says: Converted garage and evidence of mold not remediated (they haven’t corrected any mold if there is any) - this is on every listing. So if you don’t mind a converted garage, we move on and notice that the house is FHA Insured, a very good thing. That means you don’t have to fix anything before they’re willing to insure it, this will save you time and money.

This is just the beginning, tomorrow I’ll write about the disclosure statements you can find, you’ll need Adobe Reader to view the files yourself from HUD (so download it here if you’re looking), but I’ll be providing screen shots of the disclosure I talk about for our purposes. They’re very detailed, sometimes 20 pages plus so be sure to come back tomorrow to find out just how much you can find out about HUD homes from right where you sit.

Come back tomorrow for more or sign up for the Sabrina’s Money Matters RSS Feed so you don’t miss anything!
