Yesterday we discussed shopping online and things to indicate the safety of the retailer you’re shopping with, now we’ll talk about which forms of payment you should use to best protect yourself from identity theft.
Credit Cards vs Bank Check Card
Credit Card
Using your credit card has its advantages, you may get bonus points or cash back rewards, or any kind of perk that makes you use that card. Do you have to pay for identity theft protection separately? Be sure to read the terms and services and what they can and cannot protect you from.
Check Card
Using your bank debit /credit card also has advantages, your money is insured by the federal government up to $10000.00, can you afford that kind of protection with your credit card company?
Also, the people at your bank have a relationship with you and want to keep your business, it’s not the sterile credit card call center that has computer prompted humans, it’s your bank and they’ll usually bend over backwards to help you recover anything lost.
The most important tip I can give you to aid in your decision is to read the disclosure statements with any identity theft protection you sign up with and research the companies you deal with as well.
